Now take some time to think about what your looking at. What does they above chart tell you? Actually it's a wealth of information about your opponent's hand.

If you "limp" in with "suited connectors" and someone raises there's a reasonable chance they are holding a "pocket pair" or some combination of "over cards".

If someone in a later position re raises, you can almost always put them on a big "pocket pair" or at minimum Ace-King (this is unless they bluff often).

So based purely on your cards, what do you do here. The decision is easy, FOLD.

Remember we're only considering your cards here. This has nothing to do with pot odds, implied odds, position, etc., we will get into all those later in strategy. The absolute worse thing you can do here (based on just cards) is to chase the flush or straight and hope you get lucky.

Once you have folded watch the hand play out. What you will see quite often on both Party and Empire is players chasing hands. This is especially true if they have lost a big pot recently and are on tilt. Another very common mistake you will see people make is overplaying top pair with a weak kicker. This is similiar to the hand we went over on the home page. You will see people quite often overplaying a pair of Aces with a mid (7,8,9) kicker. Take advantage of this by only playing aggressive with top pair, top kicker and you should be able to make a nice addition to your bankroll.

This is also were you make your money and grow your bankroll. You should be taking advantage of the note functions on these sites and making notes on every player. If you see a player doing this over and over add him to your buddy list and look for him every time you log in. Remember though, most of the sites now allow you to change your screen name every so often. This makes it even more important to constantly update your notes on players.

We will get into table selection in strategy and this is a big part of it.

Pot Odds

Basic Texas Hold'em Poker Strategy includes probability and a little bit of luck. A good online poker player will take the odds into account when deciding whether to call, raise or fold on a certain hand. The concept of pot odds is used to compare the odds of completing a hand to the potential payoff. Calculating pot odds is pretty simple:
First determine the value of the chips currently in the pot. Include any bets that other online poker players have already placed on the table. Then factor in any additional bets you think the players after you will make. They are called implied odds. Divide that by the value of the bet you need to call. The pot odds will need to be recalculated if another player raises after you. In that case, divide the size of the current pot, including the bets on the table, by your first bet plus the raise. Second calculate the odds of completing or improving a hand on the turn and river cards, based on the number of outs your hand has. Outs, as you know, are the number of cards left that will complete your hand. Disregard the cards the other players may have, since you don't know what they're holding. Pot odds are purely a measure of probability, and cannot account for the cards that have already been dealt. Finally compare the odds of making your hand to the pot odds. If the odds of making your hand are higher than the pot odds, then the potential payoff from winning doesn't justify the odds against making your hand, and you should fold. If, on the other hand, the odds of completing your hand are lower than the “pot odds” call.
